Sysadmin by day, developer by night

After seeing someone else mention an idea from a Startup Weekend, I’ve decided to keep my own list of ideas that I’d like to work on if no one else does them first.

These are ideas that I would personally use, so I’m not really interested in keeping them super secret for a business I’ll turn into Super Mega Corp. and take over the world with. Rather these are ideas that could be a good business if executed well, or maybe not. However they would be sites or software I’d use.

So, I am working on a couple ideas already.

Scale0 - Zermomq (libzmq now?) based scaling software. I plan on releasing a stand alone application, which using python will also allow for portions of it to be libraries which can be included in other applications. Really complex and not completely thought out yet, the repo is here - https://github.com/joerussbowman/Scale0

The plan is eventually Scale0 will be the foundation for me to build all my other apps on, allowing me to have a plan to scale them should I ever be fortunate enough to need it. Either that or it will be impressive enough that some business that needs something like that will offer to pay me lots of dollars to work on it. That’d be pretty cool too.

Unscatter.com - You know what. There are some really smart people out there who are awesome at building search engines. Bing, Google and Blekko for example. There are also some sites out there with lots of useful information, especially realtime information. Sites like Facebook and Twitter. And you can go to Google, Bing, Facebook, Twitter, Topsy… and all the rest to search for stuff. Or you can just go to Unscatter.com, search most of those sites from there (ok so I just redirect to Google, but hey they want to charge and have limits). Add in features like being able to bookmark and track multiple searches and you have a pretty nifty search engine interface. http://www.unscatter.com

Fluffcut.com - Ok, so I’ve only bought the domain. Originally I was going to make this a part of Unscatter.com but I’ve since decided to make it it’s own site. Maybe I use social sites differently that most, maybe not. Personally having a site that pulls only the links, pictures and videos from my Facebook and Twitter feeds would be useful. I can’t keep up with all the status messages, sorry.

However I don’t want to miss the latest pictures of my best friends son playing with my daughter that my wife posted. Hate it when she’s like “did you see that picture?” and I’m like “uh.. what picture?”. Or.. I’m on the east coast. It’s like purgatory for keeping up with the cool dev links people over on the west coast post. Their evening time, I’m in bed. I keep up with a lot of topics on Twitter so filtering through to just the links in the morning on my commute means I can get the meaty stuff.

So yea, Fluffcut.com which is currently a dead link is one of my next projects. Probably the one I will knock out when I need a break from Scale0.

Then, there is the ideas

PIcked this up from a blog post about someone’s Startup Weekend and thought it would be a great idea. A site like Reddit or Hacker News for politics, where instead of voting up/down you vote left/right. This actually would be a pretty cool engine which could be used for other types of topics where people lean to one direction or the other.

Another idea I have is something I originally was going to bundle into Unscatter. Actually I still might, no idea. But I want to enter the social for enterprise scene. Stuff like CoTweet and HootSuite. I think it’s a good market that has lots of growth. I have some ideas for this, including some original ones. And while I still won’t be making Super Mega Corp from them, I’m not ready to share those yet :)

So many ideas, and so little time.
