So, I read how Bing is adding Facebook likes to their search results, or rather, fully integrating Facebook likes into the search results, showing if your friends have already liked a url.
I’m really not sure how valuable that would be to me. If the url was that interesting, then I’m sure my friend would have already shared it with me, I should not have needed to search for it in the first place then.
More useful information might be how many people on the internet have shared the url on Facebook. That would be a good indicator of the quality of the url to me. In fact, I like that idea so much I implemented it back on May 4th. This works currently for all Bing, Blekko and Topsy searches on unscatter.com. Now, I didn’t work out a deal with Facebook to do this, I just used the API. In fact, I haven’t fully integrated it, it’s actually javascript using YQL to generate the results after page load. I’ll likely keep it this way, as I figure getting the results up on the screen as fast as possible is what’s best.
Honestly, I didn’t really think it was that big of deal. But I figure if the solution on Bing is important to people, some might like to know there’s another solution which presents total shares of a link on Facebook, rather than just ones from your social circle.
If you need an example, try this Topsy search on unscatter.com for more information on Bing and Facebook.
