Sysadmin by day, developer by night

I’ve now paid the first bill for http://www.unscatter.com. It’s been up for 1 month and Rackspace has gone ahead and deducted my first months hosting costs.

I think I’ve gotten quite a lot out my $10.69. I haven’t actually registered my business yet, I’m still heeding the advice of build the product, worry about the business later. My product has improved dramatically in the past month, which is pretty amazing seeing as I can probably count the amount of hours I’ve put into it in the past 30 days on my fingers and toes.

It’s weird, I’m actually pretty excited about the fact I’ve spent money on this thing that was just an idea a year or so ago. I’m moving slow right now, my wife is going to have our second baby any day now, I have to take it slow. Yesterday I was informed of another api that looks like it will have a good chance to improve the quality of video results I return for the internet search, so I’ll be working on that this week. Then I’ll be focusing on the hosted search platform, because from day one I’ve wanted to provide a product that customers will pay for. Once that’s done, then I’ll have to create a business identity before starting to charge anyone.

Now that I’ve spent money that could have been used to buy diapers, I really feel my stake is stuck in the ground. I have no problem telling people now that the goal of unscatter.com is to not only be the best source of getting current and relevant information about any topic, but it’s future is to replace the search forms of websites across the internet. Whether you’re Joe Blow running a personal blog business, or a Fortune 500 company marketing department, Unscatter.com will be able to provide the best way of getting your content to your users.

Of course I’ve still got a long way to go. I’m still doing all of this alone, and in my spare time. Did I mention I work a full time job and have a family that’s about to grow? However, now that I’m $10.69 into it, I know I’m going to keep working at it. I already have music and video games as a hobby, this has felt like a hobby at times, but it’s not a hobby anymore. I’m really excited.
